Flapping noise on the passenger side when driving
A flapping noise Do you hear a flapping noise, almost like you're driving on a flat tire, except all the tires on the car are fully inflated? If yes, then it is very likely that you have a broken V-belt in the car engine. The good news is that replacing a fan belt is a pretty standard and easy fix.

Posted Feb 19, 2011 718 posts "It's a loose plastic barrette/fastener" I posted on the same topic a while back. Mine only makes the rattling noise at highway speeds. After a month with this noise, it suddenly disappeared; For now. The only thing I remember was setting the humidity very low up front. Oh yeah, I had the same thing, a rattling noise coming from the passenger side, especially at highway speeds. It was a loose plastic pin that should hold the right front plastic wheel snugly in place. If you get behind the right front tire, get a good feel for the wheel, and slide past the tire at about hub height (it's a pinch), you'll find a recessed area with a plastic peg in it. Every week I would reach in and turn this little pin, which would stop the noise for a day or two. I finally went to the dealer and they replaced it with an "upgrade" pin. Problem solved. The reason the rattle gets worse at highway speeds is because it's caused by the wind buffeting the plastic wheel arch. I was freaking out because otherwise the Volt is so quiet and smooth! Registered September 8, 2008 ·4,728 issues A preliminary Product Bulletin is available for a rattling or fluttering noise coming from the right front of the vehicle when driving at highway speeds, typically above 50 mph. There is a documented solution to this issue which (as correctly pointed out by Sparks) is to change the plastic fastener (actually a plastic rivet device) used to hold the inner lining of the wheel arch. Take it to your dealer ASAP and they should be able to fix the problem as per the bulletin. HTH WOT Joined Dec 3, 2010 442 posts I made a while ago on the same topic….

Driver Side Flapping Noise (60+ mph only) Has anyone experienced a strange "flapping" noise coming from the outside of the driver's door at high speed? It's as if something is attached to the left front corner of the car somewhere and isn't tight enough, making a rattling noise at speeds above 100 km/h (60+ mph). Don't squeal, just flap. There is no noise on the passenger side, only on the driver's side. The noise is completely gone at speeds below 55-60mph and occurs once top speed is reached. I've looked everywhere but everything seems solid and tight... With all windows open the rear passenger seat belt moves against the back seat at about that speed. I was driving home recently and heard a flapping noise on the drivers side and thought something was stuck in my landing gear or even my tire and the wind was causing it to flap. I stopped to check I didn't see anything so I continued home and stopped at my local Toyota and they didn't see anything loose or out of place. We did a test drive and of course there was no noise. Later that night when I was driving it started in the middle of my driveway, I parked and when I drove again there was no sound and I haven't heard it since; that was 3 days ago. I thought it was just highway speed, but I heard it at different speeds. Has anyone experienced this or have any idea what it could be? Any contribution will be greatly appreciated! Most of the time, when I hear a car flapping down the street, I look over and see that they have a loose or cracked underbody panel. Check your tires as a stud often makes a knocking noise when driving. If not, have you checked if all windows are fully open? Wind flapping noise on passenger side - resolved! Joined Nov 18, 2013 174 Posts Discussion Starter #1 May 3, 2016 For a while now I've been getting a flapping or fluttering noise that sounds like it's coming from the lower right (passenger) side of the windshield . Sometimes I can hear it at 40 MPH, but usually I have to go over 50 MPH to hear it. It's annoyingly loud (even the least fussy passengers comment on it). It's definitely related to the wind, because sometimes when a big gust passed by, I could hear the flapping sound change. I removed the front fairing (bottom edge of windshield) and found many broken fasteners (I suspect they were broken by the person who replaced my windshield a while back). I was sure the misplaced fairing would be the problem, so I bought new clip-ons and reattached the fairing, but to my surprise, the noise was still there. It turned out that the noise was instead being caused by a piece of plastic behind the front fender panel that closed off the gap in front of the passenger door. To get to it, you need to remove the inner fender liner (screw and clip combination). In my case, most of the clips were not reusable (they broke), so you may want to be prepared with some spare clips - the plastic part that makes the noise is indicated by the red arrow in the image below. continuation. All the fasteners were still in place but it was very loose and hitting it made a loud rattle. I taped it in place with a piece of double sided molding tape and then taped it from the top with a piece of Gorilla tape. After that the (really annoying) wind noise was completely gone! So happy! So if you have a similar noise of wind, flapping and fluttering, this could save you the search! (In my case the noise was on the passenger side, but the same piece of trim is also present on the driver's side, so I'm assuming both could be causing this problem.) Here's an update with the photos just posted if it's helpful: Turns out the noise was caused by a piece of plastic behind the front fender liner filling the gap in front of the passenger door. To get to it, you need to remove the inner fender liner (screw and clip combination). In my case, most of the clips were not reusable (they broke), so maybe you should be prepared with some spare clips: the plastic part that makes the noise is...

FAQs
Why is my passenger side knocking? ›
It is more likely that the “ticking-like” sound that you hear coming from the passenger side of the car is actually coming from the engine compartment. If the “ticking-like” sound is coming from the engine compartment, this could be due to a faulty drive belt or drive belt pulley, or a faulty tensioner pulley.
Why is my car making a knocking sound when I drive? ›If your engine is knocking, what you're really hearing is fuel burning unevenly in your engine's cylinders. With the proper balance of air and fuel, small pockets of fuel will burn one at a time so that they are spaced out evenly.
Why does my right side suspension make a clunking noise? ›If you hear a clunk when the suspension works over bumps, you may have excessive clearance in a joint due to wear. It might be as simple as a loose nut on the strut, or something more subtle such as a shrunken, dried-out rubber bushing.
Why is there a knocking sound when I drive over bumps? ›A knocking sound when going over bumps can indicate a problem with the suspension struts. There might be a clanking sound of metal hitting metal when you go over bumps. This could show the rubber bushes that join parts of the suspension have failed.
What does a knocking wheel bearing sound like? ›Rumbling/Growling Noise
In a normal situation, you can pinpoint the problematic wheel bearing if you hear this noise. In most cases, the bad bearing is the cause of the rumbling noise.
You will hear a loud thump coming from the bottom of your vehicle. This noise is typically caused by a worn sway bar bushing that can no longer hold the sway bar in place. As the free sway bar moves around when going over bumps or taking a corner, the knocking noise is created.
How do you know if your transmission is knocking? ›Clunking, humming or whining sounds are signs of automatic transmission problems. Faulty manual transmissions will also give off loud machinelike sounds that seem to come out of nowhere. A clunking noise when you shift gears is a telltale transmission situation.
Is it safe to drive a car with clunking noise? ›If you hear a clunking noise that is especially prominent when you drive over potholes or speed bumps, you probably have a problem with your shock absorbers or your suspension. Continuing to drive with a broken or faulty shock absorber is a bad idea for the health of your car.
Can I drive with a knocking sound? ›My engine is clunking and knocking
What to do – Stop driving and have the engine checked immediately. A knocking in your engine could be something as simple as a poor fuel mix. The wrong blend of fuel and air can cause multiple ignition points, creating those knocking noises you can hear.
How Do You Fix Rod Knock? The only solution is an engine rebuild where you pull the rods and replace the bearings. It's likely that the flailing rod damaged the crank journal surface, so you'll definitely need the crank polished and most like turned.
