Store closing:10330 oeste de Silver Spring Drive, Milwaukee
The Silver Spring Drive store closed on March 10. It was especially sad because it was located in one of Milwaukee's 13 food deserts, places where at least 100 households with limited access to transportation live more than half a mile from a grocery store.
The next closest supermarket is Pick 'n Save which is about 3 miles away and tends to have higher prices on many items. Walmart said seven of its Supercenters remain open within 13 miles of the Silver Spring Drive location.

Store closing:11400 Carretera 99, Everett
Walmart says it closed that Everett, Washington store in April because it wasn't doing well. But locals say there have also been multiple shopliftings, with one person saying even the socks must have been locked up.
Theft is a chronic problem in the area for other businesses as well. In July 2022, a nearby Starbucks closed due to crime issues.
There are several other Walmart stores in Snohomish County, so shoppers will hopefully find products elsewhere nearby.

Store closing:24919 Westheimer Parkway, Katy (neighborhood market concept)
The Walmart Neighborhood Market in Katy, Texas, a suburb of Houston, closed on March 10 due to poor financial results.
Walmart's Neighborhood Market concept stores were designed to compete with smaller grocery stores such as Kroger in urban areas that did not allow or could not support a full-scale supercenter store.
However, locals say theft has also been a problem at this store. Kroger and Market Town continue to be options for people who have once shopped at this Walmart store.

Store Closures:
- 4200 82nd Ave SE, Portland
- 1123 N. Hayden Meadows Drive, Portland
While Portland, Oregon has received a lot of attention for crime problems in recent years, shoplifting hasn't been the only reason these stores have closed.
Some business experts have suggested that the city's high business taxes, as well as an additional surcharge for companies that pay their CEO more than 100 times the median employee salary, had a lot to do with the decision to disable the plugin.
Another factor in Walmart's departure could be Portland's culture of supporting small, independent retailers rather than giants like Walmart.

Store closing:301 San Mateo Blvd SE, Albuquerque
Walmart recently closed its San Mateo Boulevard store in Albuquerque, leaving a gaping, mile-wide void in grocery options for locals.
There are several stores nearby, such as Sprouts and Smith's (both within a mile), as well as Asian and Mexican specialty markets. But none of them are as big or as comprehensive as Walmart, making it difficult for locals who might bepaying too much for groceries.
Local government leaders are considering repurposing a building vacated by Walmart and are hoping to hear from the community what direction to take.

Store closing:1200 Shingle Creek Parkway, centro de Brooklyn
This suburban Walmart location in Minneapolis closed on April 21.
Walmart isn't the only major retailer leaving parts of Minneapolis: Aldi, Walgreens and Target all recently left the Twin Cities areas.
The Brooklyn Center Walmart is in a strip mall with several other stores. Walmart's closure could have a negative impact on nearby retailers.

Store closing:3701 Portage Road, South Bend
One of Walmart's two South Bend locations closed permanently on April 21. While this will leave a huge void in jobs and retail in the area, it may not be as devastating as closures elsewhere.
A short distance from the former location is a Meijer and Aldi grocery store, providing constant access to the groceries, cosmetics, and other products that Walmart once provided to South Bend residents.

Store Closures:
- 17550 South Halsted Street, Homewood
- 12690 S. Ruta 59, Plainfield
- 840 N. McCormick Blvd., Lincolnwood (Pickup Only Concept)
- 1511 Camp Jackson Road, Cahokia
- 8431 S. Stewart Ave., Chicago
- 4720 S. Cottage Grove Ave., Chicago
- 2844 N.Broadway, Chicago
- 2551 Oeste Cermak Road, Chicago
Of the 21 recent Walmart closures, eight are in Illinois, with the majority in and around Chicago.
While this means a significant loss of jobs and business opportunities in the area, workers will have the option of relocating to another location.
Local residents near the Cermak Road location did not give up without a fight and held a rally to protest the decision. They expressed concern about the lack of access to grocery prices that fit their budgets and the disappearance of a convenient Walmart pharmacy.
However, Walmart said its Chicago stores had not been profitable since the day they opened 17 years ago and the company had lost millions.

Store closing:1801 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta
Initially, Walmart closed two locations: a store on Howell Mill Road and another at 835 M.L.K. Jr Drive NW - in Atlanta.
Unlike the other stores on this list, Howell Mill Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Atlanta don't just "bad results." In December, arson was reported at both locations.
In January, Walmart announced it would reopen a Martin Luther King Jr. Drive location as a Neighborhood Market store and will permanently close the Howell Mill Road store.
The Howell Mill Road location could not be reinvented as a Neighborhood Market store due to location constraints.

Store closing:Calle 99H NO, Washington, DC
While Walmart isn't the only grocery store in Northeast DC, it's probably the cheapest. Locals have more expensive options nearby, such as Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter and Whole Foods.
Several locals told local media they were concerned about the shutdown, noting it would create a widening food desert, making it impossible for working-class citizens to earn a living in Washington.

Store closing:3701 SE Dodson Road, Bentonville (pickup concept only)
Even Walmart's home state wasn't spared during the latest round of store closings.
The pickup-only Bentonville, Arkansas location, the first of its kind where customers did not have access to the interior of the store, closed its doors on February 17.
Experts say Walmart's pandemic-inspired pickup-only grocery store experiment has come to an end, though it did pave the way for the widespread curbside pickup we see today.

Retailers across the country are tightening their belts with layoffs and store closings as they prepare to weather what many see as the coming recession.
If you live in one of these communities, your grocery bills may be a bit higher right now. Taking a part-time job, additional moonlighting, or finding another wayearn more moneyit may be the best option to avoid these higher costs.
Walmart may cut costs in the short term, but there will be long-term implications for communities that may struggle to find alternatives to the cheap food, medicine and household items that leave these Walmarts closed.
